“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall,” wrote F Scott Fitzgerald, and never a truer word was spoken about what is by far the best season. With its crisp mornings, bonfire smells and unshakeable back-to-school feeling, autumn is a wonderful time to refresh the home.
Updating your decor seasonally isn’t about spending a fortune every few months. You can swap out a piece here, a rug there, and have a space that feels as though it’s turned with the leaves outside. For autumn, I like to focus on a few key areas:
- Textiles – layer up chunky knitted blankets, soft fleece-y throws, velvet cushions and richly padded eiderdowns
- Lighting – autumn is the season of the best golden hours, but as the nights draw in it’s also a time when we rely on artificial accent lighting heavily. Consider candlelight, table lamps, standard lamps and even mirrors to bounce light around a space
- Colours – the autumnal palette speaks for itself, from burnished gold and rich rusts, to the 2020 update of coniferous greens, deep blues and dusky pinks
So, below are my picks for accents – big and small – that can get your home ready for long cosy evenings and brisk weekday mornings.
