50 Autumnal Home Decor Updates

“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall,” wrote F Scott Fitzgerald. And I couldn’t agree more with his sentiment about autumn, undeniably the best season. With its crisp mornings, autumnal home decor and unshakeable back-to-school feeling, autumn is a wonderful time to refresh the home.

Updating your decor seasonally isn’t about spending a fortune every few months. You can swap out a piece here and there, and you’ll have a space that transforms just as the trees outside do.

Psst! Want to read more about autumn and why it rocks?

Nine Reasons Why Autumn Is The Best Season For Your Home (And One Reason It’s The Worst)

My favourite kinds of autumnal home decor

  1. Textiles – layer up chunky knitted blankets, soft fleece-y throws, velvet cushions and richly padded eiderdowns
  2. Lighting – autumn is the season of the best golden hours. But as the nights draw in it’s also a time when we rely on artificial accent lighting heavily. Consider candlelight, table lamps, standard lamps and even mirrors to bounce light around a space
  3. Colours – the autumnal palette speaks for itself. From burnished gold and rich rusts, to the 2020 update of coniferous greens, deep blues and dusky pinks

Autumnal home decor colour schemes

Warm and rich and deep and full of substance. It’s a description both of the perfect autumnal colour palette, and the perfect autumnal casserole (see point 5). A pleasing update to the ochres and umbers for 2019 is the addition of coniferous green and an inky blue. Most often in the form of a frighteningly expensive velvet sofa longer than my entire house. But jewel colours on the cooler side balance the warm autumnal scheme without sacrificing any of its richness.

So, below are my picks for accents to get your home ready for long cosy evenings and brisk weekday mornings.
