From minimalist Matisse to the positively Picasso-esque, the abstract faces decor trend is taking over home decor. If new spring/summer 2022 collections are anything to go by, they aren’t disappearing any time soon.

Face-inspired designs are popping up on prints, vases and ornaments all over the place. Some of the brands being bullish on this trend for 2022 include H&M Home, Zara Home and Anthropologie. But you won’t just find these trends on the high street – big designer brands are using the same motifs.
Where did the faces home decor trend come from?
The fluid, abstract face illustrations that have come to cover everything from t-shirts to earrings, bedding to vases, are inspired by the work of Matisse and Picasso in the early twentieth century.
Modernism was born out of a society coming to terms with the unprecedentedly rapid change of industrialisation. And so in the technology age, it’s perhaps not surprising that we’ve come full circle to once again admire the whimsy and freedom of Matisse and Picasso’s abstract treatment of faces.
Pulling this design motif into your home offers a playful nod to the masters of modernism, without the price tag of a Matisse…
How to pull off the faces home decor trend
It’s a great way to add quirky, characterful accents to your home decor. But as with any trend, be sure not to over-use it. Too many face motifs can begin to compete with one another, and will feel theme-y rather than considered. Instead, curate one or two pieces you really love, and go for different types. For example, a Matisse print and an abstract face-print vase. Or a set of sculptural book ends and a statement coffee table book with a face print on the cover.
If you’re not sure where to start, take a look at some of the pieces below for inspiration.
