Spring Home Decor: The Ultimate Guide

Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking… Here’s how to do spring home decor without the cliches.

Spring doesn’t have to mean florals. It doesn’t have to mean sugary pastels and Cath Kidston prints. You can make a few choice updates to your decor for the new season while staying true to your style.

Like I said in this autumn update, changing up your interiors seasonally doesn’t mean throwing everything out and spending a fortune on new pieces. In fact, we must all be more mindful than ever about the amount of stuff we bring into our homes.

But there are a few items that are affordable and practical to swap out, then keep for next year when the blossom begins to open and the birds begin to sign again…

Change up cushion covers to lighten a dark sofa or neutral chair. Table cloths, blankets and bedding can totally transform a room for just a few pounds. The books you put on display, the prints in your frames and the objects on your shelves can also change with the seasons – swap richness for freshness. And my favourite of all: a soft-hued rug will instantly lighten an entire space, creating a more dramatic transformation than you could have guessed.

Four Elements To Spring Home Decor

  1. Colour – if you don’t love the Easter pastels, look for dustier, unsaturated versions. If in doubt, neutral cream and oat shades will do the same job
  2. Texture – linen, waffled cotton, percale, raw or bleached wood and my favourite, rattan
  3. Life – plants (real or artificial), flowers, wreaths, even prints and book covers featuring greenery
  4. Fragrance – candles aren’t just for wintry hygge, but also consider diffusers or, for a ’90s throwback, incense sticks
